Iolite, also called 'Viking compass stone', is an aluminum-magnesium silicate with orthorhombic crystalline structure. Its color ranges from deep blue to violet, often showing striking pleochroism (appearing blue, gray or yellow depending on viewing angle). It forms in metamorphic rocks and is mainly mined in India, Sri Lanka and Madagascar. Vikings historically used it for navigation by filtering polarized light.
