Jet is a variety of lignite, an organic sedimentary rock derived from fossilized wood in an anaerobic environment. Deep black in color, shiny when polished, it is lightweight and brittle to the touch. Historically mined mainly in England (Whitby) and Spain, it was already used in antiquity for jewelry and amulets, especially in the Victorian era as a symbol of mourning. Its fossil nature connects it to deep time and organic transformation.
